2012 - During my high school life, I’ve no other choice but to take up science as my major even though I want to do art. My Form 3 class teacher once said to me, “oh, I didn’t know that you can actually draw. Did you know that drawing stuffs have no future? Don’t waste your time on drawing. It’s better for you to focus and do revision for my subjects”. I was devastated after hearing that comment.
However, I did not take that criticism seriously and continued doing what I am passionate in as well as my belief that this path will bring me to great heights. I remember my parent telling me that they have no money for my tertiary study, I figured out that a scholarship is my only way out, and to get a scholarship I need a good result. Statistically, scholarships are more likely to be given to a student studying in the science stream rather than the arts. I will need to endure 2 of my final years in high school and ace the exam so that I can pursue my passion degree in creative field with a scholarship. (and I made it!)
I believe that anything we do in life there will always be obstacles and challenges and we have to always keep our heads up and never allow pessimists to push us down. I’ve also learnt that we have to give ourselves some self-respect, faith and trust in ourselves. Besides that, we also need to put in a lot of effort to get what we want. We are the controllers of our own life, and all of us have the power to control which path to take..

2019 Write-up
Is SPM result really that important?
I remember my parent telling me that they have no money for my tertiary education. In high school, I’ve no other choice but to take up science as my major even though I want to do art because of the 'system'. A teacher told me, “oh, I didn’t know that you can actually draw." "Did you know that drawing stuffs have no future? Don’t waste your time on drawing. It’s better for you to focus and do revision for my subject."
However, I did not take that "criticism" seriously and continued doing what I am passionate in with the little amount of free time left apart from studying. A Facebook friend Kevin Pinga inspired me that SPM result can be a KEY for students who are from poor or middle class family to open up doors and opportunities. Kevin did great in SPM and was eventually sponsored by MDEC to pursue Visual Effects course in United States back in 2012. I came to a conclusion that securing a scholarship for the course I love is my only way out and to get a scholarship I need a good result...
I failed my first Chemistry and Add math exam in form 4, but I did not give up. I did more practices even though I am not passionate about these subjects. The last 2 years of my high school life was miserable mentally, I studied really hard.. force feeding myself with knowledge. I am grateful that I have a bunch of great friends (5S4) who brought light and laughter into my life during my darkest time.
Graduated from high school, I managed to secure a full scholarship for Animation & Visual effects in Multimedia University Cyberjaya with my SPM result. 2 miserable high school years in exchange for 4 years of financial, mental freedom and happiness in the creative world. Worth it. The rest is history. The SPM result is a piece of thrash now but 5 years ago it was my golden key to open up the treasure which benefited me for years, it altered the path of my life.
Share this to a friend who's passionate about ART and is currently struggling in high school. DON'T GIVE UP.
