yong peng johor
When I was studying in mmu I get to meet different friends from the south johor, and I have this opportunity to visit one of their hometown in kangkar bharu yong peng.
Other than paddy field, I don't have the opportunities to enter any agricultural lands because I don't have contacts or friends. Thanks to a university assignment of mine which requires us to create a documentary film. And finding out that my friend family owns a plot of land with palm plantation I get to have a reason to go to my friends hometown and feature the stories of their parents.
It is by this rare opportunity that I get to explore and use the bus services from TBS station, a bus station that has the look of an airport and all the buses are heading southward. Thanks to the friend of mine I get to see how a palm Plantation is operated from A to Z, and get to see and interact with the local people who are working there too. During the second year of my university experiences instead of going back to my home I went south to my friend place to capture more of the rural sceneries there and eventually accumulated this series of works.
I also get to see the perspective of how hardworking chinese set up their plantation business and manage it, as well as the stories behind it. Even the foreign workers who are from Indonesia who are working in the Middle of the nowhere who told me they're homesick when I captured their portraits which I could somehow relate to.
Some of my best works created here eventually won a palm Plantation international photography contest and the prizes allow me to finally get myself a motorcycle (yamaha fz150i) to be used and ridden around in Selangor.
