My experiences of hustling alone in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor after graduating from university in the year 2017 gave rise to this series of artworks. I was given the opportunity to pursue a master's degree in MMU, but I declined it in favor of pursuing my passion full-time and attempting to make it work on my own without being aware of the true reality of the environment and system I live in. There is no right or wrong, this is both the funny and the most beautiful part because without the lovely lie and perception I created for myself, there will be no opportunity to create these works of art.
The amount of rejection, shame, and mental torment I have to endure in reality just to get a job or project, the amount of ass-kissing I have to do (oh, I can be great at that), and both positive and negative things are all fertilizer for my personal development. As an ordinary Chinese in Malaysia, my process of working alone without any connections or support is exhausting and full of sweat and tears.
Home is a place where we don't need a GPS to get around. However, the city of Kuala Lumpur is not and will never be my home. I recall having to rely on Google Maps to get from point A to point B and constantly praying that I wouldn't get lost or get into the wrong lane and miss the exit (something I have done countless times, haha). I would sit in my old used car, which my parents drove from Penang to Cyberjaya for me, trying to find the right direction. It has just become a part of my life there.
There is a positive aspect to this series in that I invited friends I met along my natural path to be part of the artworks without them realizing the meaning or my aim, to preserve the moment because I know we will soon split ways. Looking back, I am grateful for all the experiences offered on my natural path and look forward to more in the future so that I can create more artworks.
