penang island and mainland
Penang island is a small island that is surrounded by hills and sea (malacca strait sea), growing up in the high dense town of Farlim, the most convenient way to get around is to use the bus or motorbike to avoid traffic congestion. Penang hill is very near to my home so I often visit there on my father's motorbike to capture the sunrises from the peak when I was in high school. The first train up to the hill is 6am, sometimes I will invite my friend to tag along even though they don't do photography like I do.
Penang hill is a natural spot near to my home and it can be easily accessed via a convenient funicular train. The feeling I felt when I was up there is the same as the feeling when I was in Alor Setar paddy field, but this time I get to see the bird eye view of the entire island, even my home, from a different perspective. Sometimes I will stay on top of the hill until late in night and catch the last train down from the hill, and if I'm not riding my motorbike, my mom will always be there to fetch me back home.
From the peak of penang hill I get to observe the movement of the cars below like small ants, and make me realise that sometimes the traffic nuisance that we complain about in a bigger picture is just a small problem, a reminder that we should not always magnify problems that are not that serious. From the flat I stay below, I can only see buildings from ground level, which offer me a limited perspective and understanding of the space I am in. From above with a telezoom lens, I only realise that penang Bridge is directly behind the hill behind my flat.
Fast forward to 2024 when I returned to penang but this time I am based in mainland, I get to see another perspective not from the island this time but from the opposite, and I look forward to the works I am able to create and make in this journey moving forward. Perspective from the hill, from the sea, from the other side, all offer different stories and understanding of the places I am in, and I appreciate the opportunity given to experience and capture them.
